Left explains Somnath Chatterjee expulsion

Defending the decision to expel Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee from the party, CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat said on Thursday that they did not have any other option but to take disciplinary action against the veteran Marxist as he refused to quit the post after a party directive.

Comrade Karat, do you think any party is above the dignity and position of the Speaker of Lok Sabha? You have played politics with the institution of the Speaker of the Indian Parliament.

Addressing a press conference here, Karat said it was "unfortunate" for them to take disciplinary action against the veteran Marxist leader and it was not a "happy thing" to do.

Then why do it?

"The Central Committee decided that no member of the party should remain the Speaker of Lok Sabha after the withdrawal of support. We were asked to communicate this to him. He did not agree...we had no option (but to take action)," Karat said.

Why not respect the individual decision of Somnath Chatterjee? The Congress won the trust vote by 19 votes and Chatterjee's 'nay' would not have made any difference. Your party, my dear comrade, lacks intra-party democracy.
